CROCOSMIA (Montbretia)

The modern Crocosmia are a greatly improved Montbretia with much larger flowers and glowing colours.  They are  easily grown in any soil that is not too dry. They do not flower well in hot dry conditions or deep shade. Excellent for extending the season into late summer. Most are clump forming and should be lifted an divided every 3-4 years to maintain flowering. They also make good cut flowers.

We found a stock of this lovely deep golden Crocosmia in a local garden. Although we know no more of its history than its name, it is a very fine plant smothering itself in flowers in late summer. Grow in any garden soil in sun or light shade. Crocosmia have a bad reputation for excessive amounts of leaves. This is easily overcome if you divide the clumps ruthlessly every 3 years to maintain the sixze of the corms.

Award of Garden MeritMasses of medium-sized brilliant red flowers on dark stems. A showy new hybrid producing an endless succession of large,open clear orange-red flowers. Vigorous. One of the best; the flowers are much larger and longer lasting than the old montbretia.
