These increasingly popular plants will grow in any ordinary garden soil, but prefer a moist, well-drained rich loam in partial shade, where they are lime tolerant.Nodding , bell-shaped flowers in spring. They appreciate a top dressing of well rotted compost after flowering and resent disturbance.

HELLEBORUS ABSCHASICUS

This old plant was long known as Atrorubens. This Caucasican species is deciduous and often in flower at or even before Christmas. It has rather open purple flowers and was the initail source of red in the lenten Rose -  H.orientalis . A reliable old friend. My original plants came from my Grandfather! Sun but probably best in shade.

This is an early flowering hellebore species from Greece. The elegant clusters of open pale creamy green flowers are often produced before Christmas. The leaves follow later. Summer dormant.  From seed originally collected in Crete 30 years ago. Plant in humus rich soil in part shade.

HELLEBORUS ORIENTALIS MIXED COLOURS

Lenten Rose.(H.x hybridus)

Easy free flowering plants for part shade. These all have large shiny mid-green palmate leaves with serrated edges. Nodding bowl-shaped  flowers in shades of pink, white and purple, often speckled.   Pot luck - mixed colours only.  They are early flowering,  soon after Christmas.  Remove the faded leaves in December to allow the flower heads to be seen, and keep the mice from attacking them!  Plant in humus rich soil in part shade. . Easy free flowering plants for part shade under tress, shrubs or a north wall. .

A delicate Balkan species helleborus that has used to give the colour in the orientalis (x hybridys) cultivars. It is a very dwarf plant, flowering later than many with small matt purple flowers. Grow in well drained soil in part shde. It likes a dry summer.

A fabulous Chinese species helleborus that has been newly introduced and proving easier to grow than at first thought. Soft pink flowers and greyish leaves. It is deciduous and seems to do best on a bank or at the base of a tree where it can be left undisturbed. We will have a few flowering size plants in March only.

The Spanish form of this small hellebore which is also a British native, The seeds originally came from Alec Gray who collected them near Segovia. Long -lasting clusters of small, pale green flowers. Completely deciduous.    Plant in humus rich soil in part shade.
