IRIS ALBICANS

White Cemetery Iris. Bearded iris species.  This is one of the oldest iris  in cultivation. It originated in Saudi Arabia but has spread throughout the Middle East. Large white flowers on short stems. It is easy in a dry sunny position. Sterile. Plant the rhizomes at the surface with the roots going down.

A tiny Greek rhizomatous species with tiny mauve flowers. Good for troughs, top of a wall or alpine house. Must be kept dry in summer.

IRIS BILIOTTII

 Species bearded iris  This is a tall  bearded iris from eastern Turkey where it is found in graveyards. It has pale blue purple standards and deeper falls. An elegant iris rarely seen in our gardens. Sterile.  .We have grown it here for nearly 30 years. Flowers best after a dry summer.

Easy plants for a dry sunny bed where it gradually spreads. Plant the rhizomes at the surface with the roots going downwards..

IRIS ENSATA

Award of Garden MeritSpecies iris (Japanese water iris). The huge flat blue, purple or white flowers often have the most amazing patterns and swirls on them. They do not need to be in water although they can be inundated in the winter and they are very beautiful beside a pond. We grow them in ordinary garden soil that is not too dry. They are clump forming with small rhizomes and fans of narrow leaves.

IRIS FOETIDISSIMA

(The Roast Beef Iris). Small pale lavender flowers delicately veined with dark brown lines followed by clusters of bright orange-scarlet berries that stay on the plant all winter. Native of woods in  SW England. Forms clumps of evergreen leaves that do smell of roast beef if torn. AGM

Award of Garden MeritSpecies iris The wonderful plum (or is it a greengage?) scent of this iris makes up for the small size of its rich plum coloured flowers. Narrow clumps of upright leaves. It is a small species iris of the spuria group and is found from Spain to Croatia. easy in a dry sunny spot where it can make substantial clumps.

IRIS UNGUICULARIS 'PELOPONNESE SNOW'

IRIS UNGUICULARIS (stylosa)

Award of Garden MeritWinter Iris (Probably better known as iris stylosa). The large,fragrant bright lilac flowers with darker markings are produced all winter. All this group appreciate a warm sun-baked corner and will stand very poor soil. Cut the evergreen leaves back to 8" in October and rake out the dead ones.  Like all this group flowers are produced all winter often c0mpletely smothering the plant ,  stopping when there is a frost only to start again once the temperature rises.   Clump forming.
